the leadership of the apex pension regulatory authority, National Pension Commission (PenCom) has launched the PenCom Media Excellence Award.
The move is a giant step to encourage professionalism, accuracy and excellence in pension journalism and strengthen public awareness of Nigeria’s pension system.
The maiden edition of the award was commissioned at the just concluded 2026 PenCom Media Conference held in Ikeja, Lagos, Nigeria where journalists who have distinguished themselves through outstanding reporting of the pension sector were recognised for their contributions.
The award produced winners in three categories, with Chuks Udo-Okonta, Publisher of Inspenonline, emerging winner of the Online Category; Modestus Anaesoronye of BusinessDay winning the Print Category; and Ini John-Mekwa of Channels Television taking the Broadcast Category.
Each of the three winners received a ₦1 million cash prize.
Presenting the awards at the conference in Ikeja, Lagos, the Director-General of PenCom, Omolola Oloworaran, commended the journalists for their commitment to reporting pension industry developments and educating Nigerians on the importance of pension savings and retirement planning.
Oloworaran urged journalists covering the pension sector to maintain high professional standards and communicate pension policies, reforms and developments in a manner that ordinary Nigerians can easily understand.
“We acknowledge your good works and we want to appreciate you. We urge you to keep doing your best. PenCom and its activities need to be communicated to Nigerians in a very simple and understanding manner. So, I congratulate you all. Let all journalists be intentional in their works,” she said.
In the Online Category, Udo-Okonta emerged ahead of Nkechi Naeche-Esezobor of BusinessToday NG and Zaka Khaliq of BusinessDiary, who were also nominated for the award.
Anaesoronye of BusinessDay won the Print Category, defeating fellow nominees Ebere Nwoji of THISDAY and Victor Ahiuma-Young of Vanguard Newspaper.
In the Broadcast Category, Ini John-Mekwa of Channels Television emerged winner, while Ebere Obike of Radio Nigeria and Kola Abel of Eko FM were also nominated.
The recognition highlights the growing importance of specialised journalism in communicating developments within Nigeria’s pension industry, particularly at a time when the sector is undergoing significant reforms aimed at expanding pension coverage, improving contributors’ confidence and strengthening retirement security.
The PenCom Media Excellence Award, stressed Oloworaran, is designed to encourage journalists to deepen their understanding of the pension industry and produce credible, balanced and impactful reports capable of improving public knowledge of the Contributory Pension Scheme (CPS).
For PenCom, stronger pension journalism can play an important role in improving pension awareness and penetration in Nigeria, particularly by helping workers and contributors understand their rights, responsibilities and available retirement savings options.
The award winners expressed appreciation to PenCom and their colleagues for recognising their contributions to pension reporting.
They also pledged to sustain their commitment to quality journalism and improve their coverage of the pension sector.
PenCom indicated that the Media Excellence Award will become an annual initiative, forming part of the Commission’s Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) efforts to encourage excellence and professionalism in pension journalism.
