Worried about the delayed implementation, Pensioners under the payroll of Lagos State government are mobilising for protest against the state government over delayed payment of their entitlements.

Giving the state government a 19-day ultimatum to pay or face the consequences, the pensioners who are under Contributory Pension Scheme (CPS), blamed their planned protest on the systematic delay by their employer.

According to them, “Having spent many years to serve the state government, it would not be fair that we are being subjected to untold pains to receive our entitlements.”

The chairman, National Union of Pensioners under Contributory Pension Scheme (NUPCPS), Lagos State Council,  Michael Omisande said they have sent a warning letter to the state governor to credit the accounts of the pensioners with the Pension increases/Wage Award or incur the wrath of the Pensioners.

According to Omisande, the planned protest will take place 31st August, 2026, if their demand is not met.

“In the course of our meeting with the director general, Lagos State Pension Commission (LASPEC), Babalola Obilana and the executive director, Finance, Muyiwa Oshin, we were given assurance on payment of the Pension increases/wage Award issue.”

During the meeting, Obilana said he wondered that though Mr. Governor had given directive after meeting with him, yet, nothing seemed to have changed or when specifically the implementation would be carried out.

Copy of the planned protest letter was also sent to the Speaker, Lagos State House of Assembly, Hon. Mudashiru Obasa and the Lagos State commissioner for Police for adequate protection.

On her part, the chairman, Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), Lagos State Council, Comrade Agnes Sessie who also spoke,  pleaded with the permanent secretary, Public Service Office (PSO) and director general, LASPEC to expedite action on the implementation of the Pension increases/Wage Award debacle.

“We therefore, appeal to our members in Lagos and it’s environs to be prepared for the mother of all protest, if government fails to honour the agreement.”
