The new outfit, made up of members of National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW) and the Road Transport Employers Association of Nigeria (RTEAN) work as the waste police are jointly working with Lagos Waste Management Authority (LAWMA) and the Ministry of Transportation.  As they are for operation keep Lagos Clean, they are to monitor motor parks, garages, bus stops, and major roads to report and stop bad waste disposal. As the members of these unions are to play critical roles in maintaining public order and security, they are to report suspicious activities and support the state government in clean-up of the state. It would be recalled that Lagos State Government inaugurated a special "Waste Police" task force in June 2026 to stop illegal refuse dumping, clear roadside waste, and enforce environmental law...

Nigerian Manufacturers Spent ₦1.34 Trillion On Power

Image
By Allcitynews.ng  The Executive Secretary of the National Sugar Development Council, NSDC, Mr. Kamar Bakrin, has revealed Nigerian manufacturers spent an estimated ₦1.34 trillion generating their own electricity. Even as he reiterated the cost of power, credit and logistics have continued to put them at a disadvantage. Bakrin disclosed this at the technical session of the 17th National Council on Industry, Trade and Investment, NCITI, in Enugu yesterday. According to Bakrin, factories in Nigeria pay far more than competitors for the three basic inputs of manufacturing. He cited the example of a plant in Aba and one in Ho Chi Minh City to buttress his point. He said why industrial electricity costs about eight US cents per kilowatt-hour in Vietnam and 10 cents in China, in Nigeria, it is 15 cents on the grid and up to 30 cents with diesel.   “Every factory in Nigeria is running a second, unwanted business as a private power station,” he added. Bakrin said working c...

What does Ewohimi really want from her brother community, Ewatto?

Image
By Emmanuel Egbe Ehiawaguan POLITICALLY, Ewatto Community has always done its part. From the onset, we have supported all sons and daughters of Ewohimi seeking political positions. Even in the last gubernatorial election in Edo State, despite the odds, Ewatto voted massively to support our brother, Asue Ighodalo. As a result, PDP won with a landslide victory against APC in Ewatto. Yet, some voices from Ewohimi still say Ewatto should “bow our heads for them to cut us politically.” The Ikpea family, in particular, has supported Ewohimi Community more than any other community in Esanland.  We all recall how the Ikpea family contributed millions of naira toward building the new palace before the coronation of the new Onojie of Ewohimi, even when our own community was also in need of support.  More recently, the Ikpea family also supported Ewohimi Community with millions for the launch of the Ewohimi Security Network, even when Ewatto is yet to raise funds for our ...

MOTION, An Non-government Rejects Bill, Calls For Immediate Of NGO Bill

Image
By allcitynews.ng  From Newsnowonline The Movement for the Transformation of Nigeria (MOTION) has rejected the proposed Non-Governmental Organisation (NGO) Regulation Bill before the National Assembly, describing it as a threat to Nigeria’s civic space and democratic freedoms. In a statement signed by its Convener, Hauwa Mustapha, and Co-Conveners, Christopher Isiguzo and Blessing Alims, the group called for the immediate withdrawal of the bill, arguing that existing laws already provide adequate oversight of civil society organisations. MOTION said Nigeria’s democracy depends on citizens’ ability to freely organise, associate and contribute to national development, noting that civil society organisations have played critical roles in humanitarian response, education, healthcare, climate action, women’s and youth empowerment, disaster relief, election monitoring, human rights advocacy and the promotion of accountability. The organisation warned that the proposed legislation ...

ECOWAS needs our collective wisdom, not a shared amnesia

Image
By Owei Lakemfa A dozen Heads of State of the Economic Community of West African States, ECOWAS, met in Lungi, Sierra Leone on July 19, 2026. They issued the usually bland communique on a single currency, supported the illegal violation of a sister country’s sovereignty and made false declarations on the region’s political situation and democracy. The West African leaders spoke tongue-in-cheek when they declared that they are satisfied with “the steady progress made in democratic consolidation and political governance, as well as the relative stability and resilience of the region, amidst increasing geopolitical and geostrategic pressures.” But what satisfaction in democratic consolidation can they be talking about when, of the current twelve countries in ECOWAS, Guinea-Bissau is under direct military rule, the five-year military junta in Guinea headed by General Mamadi Doumbouya has just on May 31, 2026 shed its military uniform for civilian regalia with the people having no fre...

The Ozymandias complex in the Tinubu administration psyche

Image
By Owei Lakemfa   The transformative Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway is mired in endless controversies. This is the fate of great monuments and, I dare say, great leaders.  So, my primary concerns here are not the hullabaloos  about  its actual cost and absence of biddings or, its ever changing designs as it meanders through coast and land. My interest here is its hugely successful naming ceremony. Africans take such a monumental event as the naming ceremony of a child, serious otherwise, it could be  regarded  a bastard.  Fittingly, the projected 750-kilometre road   has been named by the Tinubu Presidency as the “President Bola Ahmed Tinubu Coastal Highway.” Federal Ministry of Works Minister ‘Professor’ David Umahi explained that the Federal Government decided to so name the highway because President Tinubu dreamt of the project twenty seven years ago when he was Lagos State Governor. Umahi said: “It is one thing to dre...

Image
By allcitynews.ng  In apparent bid to prune sales and distributions of the banned pet bottled and sachet hot drinks, the leadership of National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has shifted the focus to deal with the roots, rather than the sellers. The Assistant Director in NAFDAC’s Investigation and Enforcement Directorate,Mr Kunle Ojo, who led the team, told newsmen on yesterday that the enforcement followed continued production of alcoholic products in packaging prohibited under existing regulatory directives.
