PENGASSAN Honours Past Leaders For Advancing Industrial Harmony Amidst Tough Challenges in Ikoyi, Lagos
By allcitynews.ng
The Petroleum and Natural Gas Senior Staff Association of Nigeria (PENGASSAN) has vowed to sustain workers' welfarism growth, just as the union charged three tiers of government to tackle poverty level which is breeding ground for insecurity, noting achieving peace and security would be a mirage without pruning poverty.
The Association also called for stronger collaboration with media, especially, Labour Writers Association of Nigeria (LAWAN) being the mouthpiece of Nigerian working class in order to workers' welfare.
The PENGASSAN President, Comrade Festus Osifo, made the call during a presidential dinner organised to honour past leaders of the association for their contributions to its growth and development since its establishment in 1978.
Osifo commending the past leaders for their roles which have kept the flag of PENGASSAN flying, he explained that the dinner was meant to appreciate the past leaders for advancing industrial harmony amidst external and internal crises which could have led to the sinking of the boat of the union.
Additionally, the honour was to appreciate the past leaders for their unwavering commitments toward consolidation of the union, noting that economic hardship confronting Nigerians had implications beyond the welfare of organised workers, whereby even employees earning relatively good salaries were affected by the financial difficulties of family members, neighbours and members of their communities.
According to him, a worker may have a good income but could quickly find such earnings depleted by the responsibility of supporting unemployed relatives and other people around them who are struggling financially.
The dinner became imperative to encourage future leaders of the union to intensify their unflinching supports even while out of office.
Also, the PENGASSAN helmsman maintained that governments must demonstrate greater responsiveness to the plight of Nigerians and recognise that addressing poverty was a collective responsibility involving the Federal Government, states and local governments by delivering good governance with actualisation of campaign promises.
Moreover, PENGASSAN President further reiterated that government would find it difficult to reduce insecurity if widespread poverty persisted significantly.
Osifo said the meeting was organised to ensure that the sacrifices and contributions of those who had served the association over the decades were not forgotten, especially as they, on individually basis and collectively have been contributing towards the development of the union by their suggestions and advices.
"The former leaders had continued to contribute to the progress of PENGASSAN by offering advice to the current leadership whenever they identified issues requiring attention or areas where improvements could be made."
Among the past PENGASSAN leaders in the meeting were among others:
Comrade Peter Esele
Comrade Babatunde Ogun
Comrade Bayo Olowoshile

“We decided we should give back to community. We need to do social corporate responsibility. Let our people know that we care about them. We are not government. It’s not our place to provide this. But we feel that if we are earning, we should reach out to other people. Let them get what we are getting equally,” he said.
The Secretary of the Foundation, Comrade, Mbanaso emphasized the role of women in cooking and the negative health impacts of using firewood such as premature aging and illnesses.
She said the Foundation aims to empower women by providing better cooking methods to improve their health and living conditions.
“Here, of course, you know that if you look around, you will see that the people we have on ground are women, and today we are talking about clean cooking. Actually, it is women that do more of the cooking because it’s our responsibility to provide and to cook for the family.
“And when you look at what firewood does to women and does to our health, you find out that women get sick, a lot of l sicknesses arise from use of firewood in cooking.
“So today we have come to empower them. We have come to say no to cooking with firewood and to give them a better way of cooking so that they will equally live and have better life for their children.”
