NAFDAC Uncovers Fake Toothpaste, Seizes Hundreds of Cartons

The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) nationwide campaign against counterfeit products is yielding great success as it dismantled a major fake toothpaste distribution network linked to imports from China and seizing hundreds of cartons of falsified oral care products in Kano and Sokoto states.

The operation, carried out by operatives of the agency’s Investigation and Enforcement Directorate, followed intelligence reports that led officials to Sabon Gari Market in Kano, where a suspected distributor, Adda’u Ismail Isah, was arrested.

Items recovered from the suspect included 10 cartons of Xtrene Activated Charcoal Whitening Boost toothpaste, three packets each of VigorDoctor Charcoal Powder, Kids Vigor Doctor New Formula and Bestever Signal Cavity Fighter toothpaste, as well as quantities of Craote 7.5% Nhap toothpaste.

 
The investigation subsequently led NAFDAC operatives to Sokoto, where they arrested Mr. Anas Ishaka of A.S. Assada Investment Company Limited, who was identified as the alleged supplier of the counterfeit products.

A search of his shop and warehouses uncovered a large cache of suspected fake oral care products, including 75 cartons of Xtrene Activated Charcoal Whitening Boost toothpaste, 33 cartons of Claso-up toothpaste, 131 cartons of Duarbar Herb’l toothpaste, nine cartons of Senceoyne toothpaste, 31 cartons of Creesst Black toothpaste, 55 cartons of Orell-B Pro-Expert toothpaste, 79 cartons of PRO Complete, Mild and Clinic toothpaste, and 70 cartons of Oracire+ toothpaste.

The details were contained in a statement issued on Thursday by the Head of the Public Relations Unit of NAFDAC’s Investigation and Enforcement Directorate, Victoria Akudu.

According to the agency, preliminary investigations showed that Isah identified Ishaka as his supplier, prompting the follow-up operation in Sokoto that uncovered the larger counterfeit distribution network.

“Mr. Anas Ishaka has admitted that he is the owner of the counterfeit products and that he imports them from China. Investigation is ongoing and further regulatory sanctions will be carried out as soon as investigation is concluded,” the statement said.

NAFDAC reiterated its commitment to protecting public health by eliminating counterfeit and substandard products from the market. The agency urged consumers to remain vigilant when purchasing regulated products and advised anyone with doubts about the authenticity of a product to report it through the nearest NAFDAC office or the agency’s official communication channels for prompt action.
