Lagos pensioners give fresh 7-day ultimatum to Sanwo-Olu to pay their entitlements

Pensioners under the aegis of Nigeria Union of Pensioners Contributory Pension Scheme (NUPCPS), Lagos State Council has given fresh ultimatum to Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu to meet the singular demand, payment of their 16 years pension entitlement or be prepared to face the consequences.

Giving the fresh ultimatum which will expire by August 31, the pensioners who gathered for a warning peacefully organised protest along the street in Iyana Ipaja, Lagos on Monday, 24 August, expressed sadness over the ways and manners they are being compelled to suffer for what ordinarily ought to be given to them after serving the state for 35 years.

The retirees, re-emphasised that failure by the state government to meet their demand could trigger what they described as the “mother of all protests."

The chairman of the NUPCPS, Lagos State Council, Comrade Michael Omisande, lamented against  the delay, noting despite their several meetings to resolve their delay, state governor has not paid them.

Omisande said the union had submitted a template to the state government in January 2026 outlining its proposal for implementing the pension enhancement.

According to him, the Lagos State Pension Commission, LASPEC, subsequently informed the union that approval had been given for an actuary to be engaged to facilitate the process, but the expected implementation had yet to take place.

“We earlier communicated a 19-day ultimatum to Mr Governor to credit the accounts of pensioners on the pension increases/wage award, but hitherto, nothing has been done. 

Just as they gave Governor Sanwo-Olu another 7-day ultimatum to meet their demand or face full blown state protest.

NUP Lagos State Chapter Chairman, Comrade Olatunde Busari, speaking with allcitynews, shortly before the commencement of the protest said "we are here to stage  protest this warning protest, against Sanwo-Olu regime for delaying payment of entitlements of Lagos State workers.

Busari, with his team who were  solidarity with Lagos State branch stressed, while speaking with allcitynews.ng maintained that,

"Our listening President, Bola Ahmed  Tinubu has graciously released our own which we have been enjoying since, but it is disheartening to see Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, together with his cabinet members, and the Lagos State House of Assembly have been stylishly delayed the payment. It seemed  he wants  to  push the  implementation of the payment to  the next  incoming state governor at the detriment of  enjoyment of years of  hard  labour by the pensioners.

'We are using the only weapon at our  dispososal, which is protest, to draw the attention of the general public to our plight because he is leaving office very soon, and he is trying to drag this payment to the next regime. The same Sanwo-Olu who took state fund to join  hands  against re-election of Governor Adeleke should know we can use our voter's card against them in Lagos State. Adeleke was able win  the combined  efforts of opponents because he is workers-friendly governor in Osun State."

On his part, the state chairman of the Nigeria Union of Pensioners Defined Benefit Scheme (NUPDBS), Comrade Olufemi Olarewaju maintained that,

"It seemed Sanwo-Olu, with his cabinet members and Lagos State  Assembly members are trying to short-change us by their daily revisitations of the list which we earlier submitted to them. They are subjecting our members into hardship. Our members are going through anguish pains, not able to afford medications or proper feeding, some are dying while waiting for payment of the entitlements which we worked for in 35 years active service.

"And if him, his executive and state House of Assembly refuse to pay us, we shall embark on full blown protest in August 31."

The protesters that marched through the street of Iyana Ipaja, and was led by Comrade Michael Omisande, Comrade Olufemi Olarewaju, and others, stressed that, "We can repeat what happened in Osun State election here, but we want President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to call Sanwo-Olu to order now. If Tinubu did his part by paying Federal  Government workers their own, then Tinubu should call on Sanwo-Olu to save us from painful living as our payment is being delayed by  Sanwo-Olu and his cabinet members."
