Threat to 10,000 job loss, WEMPCO workers fulfill pledge, spend 10 days on protest ground

Concerned that 10,000 of its members may be thrown into  labour market  amidst the biting and harsh economic downturn, 

Workers under Steel and Engineering Workers’ Union of Nigeria (WEMPCO), are currently staging a peaceful protest against attempt to deprive the management of the workplace by unknown receivership.


They reiterated that their action was based over the attempt to throw 10,000 workforce into labour market by the invaders, the  workers in fulfillment of their pledge, spend 10  days on protest point, waiting for federal government’s intervention. 


Apparently fighting to sustain the cordial industrial harmony they have been experiencing with the management, the workers vowed to sustain the protest until their demand is met.


"We will occupy the gate of this our office until the so-called receiver management is called to order. And if nothing tangible is  done within the  next one week, we shall mobilise our affiliates  in Trade Union Congress (TUC) and NLC occupy protest to National Assembly in Abuja until something is done because we  will not allow this WEMPCO to shut down just like that."

 Addressing selected journalists during the protest that  took place amid the Monday rain, the SEWUN National Treasurer, Comrade Nasiru Bello, stated that the workers were taken by surprise when some group of people stormed the company with armed uniformed  men to chase  them away from  the workplace.


According to him, "some of our workers have worked here for 35 years without any industrial disharmony as the management is always paying our  entitlements on time. But  to our surprise, last week, some people came under  the name of a popular bank as Receivership, that the company is owing certain amount, but we stood against  their words since  we  are not aware of  such thing.


"We are appealing to listening President, Bola Ahmed Tinubu to come to our aid because we will not allow unknown people to deprive us of our means of livelihoods just like that from us."


Similarly, the SEWUN's Deputy General Secretary, Comrade Julius Ijebor, expressed the surprise of the members over attempt being made to forcefully or stylishly take over SEWUN without any justifiable reasons.


According to Ijebor, "We are gathered  here despite  the rain to  express our concerns over the purported  plan to chase out our workers. They came with armed uniformed men last week to

expressed concern over what the described as a looming social and economic crisis. They reiterated their call on the federal government to take immediate action to safeguard the livelihoods of thousands of workers whose employment status has become uncertain following recent developments within the company.


The workers carrying various  placards, demanded immediate clarification on the status of affected employees and urged relevant authorities to ensure that any dispute involving the company is resolved without jeopardising the livelihoods of thousands of families who depend on the jobs.


As part of their promised to protect their work and the premises from the impostors, allcitynews.ng on Thursday, June 25, discovered that the workers remained in their protest ground.
