Barely eight months after receiving serious warning against visiting the state without permission from the Edo State House Governor, Benin, the 2023 Presidential candidate under the platform of Labour Party, Mr Peter Obi escaped assassination attempt on Tuesday, February 24 2026.
It would be recalled that the Edo State Governor, Monday Okpebholo on July 18 2025 warned Peter Obi against visiting Edo without security clearance.
Accusing Obi of coming into Edo State without prior permission, the governor said, "He said, “The man wey say he no get shishi, I am sending a direct message to him, there is a new sheriff in town. He cannot come to Edo State without telling me because his security will not be guaranteed.
“Whatever happens to him in Edo State, he will take it. His security won’t be guaranteed," the governor warned.
His warning was based on the visit to Benin, by Obi on July 7 when he donated N15m million to St Philomena Hospital School of Nursing Sciences for the completion of projects in the school.
The governor, who spoke on Friday while receiving Marcus Onobun, the last remaining opposition federal lawmaker in the state, into the All Progressives Congress, condemned Obi’s visit to the state.
He asserted that his visit coincided with the resurgence of violence in the state.
“That man who says he has no ‘shishi’ came and dropped ₦15 million. Where did he get it from? After he left, three people were killed. For this reason, Obi must not come to Edo without security clearance.
“His visit coincided with a resurgence of violence in the state and this will not be tolerated,” the governor stated.
