SON reminds manufacturers on strict compliance to Certification, charges media to champion the enlightenment

The leadership of Standards Organisation of Nigeria (SON) has called on the general public, especially manufacturing firms to strictly comply with certification of their products.
Also, the agency appealed to journalists for collaborative efforts toward enlightenment of manufacturing firms to imbibe as culture use of SON's authentication marks for export products to make such highly attractive in global competitive markets.
The Director General Dr. Ifeanyi Chukwunonso Okeke, made the called during one workshop, organized for journalists covering Organised Private Sector, Commerce and Industry Correspondencts Association of Nigeria (CICAN) by SON, this week in its Laboratory department in Ikeja.
According to him, partnering journalists became imperative because the workshop was targeted at empowering participants with the right information about standardization, product quality assurance and regulatory framework, the essential tools in the provision of quality products.
Okeke, who was represented by the regulatory agency’s Director, Corporate Affairs –Mrs Talatu Ethan reiterated that “As partners in progress, your role in promoting industrial development, trade facilitation and consumer protection cannot be overstated. You are the key translators between the technical language of standardisation and the everyday understanding of our citizens”.

Moreover he said “We recognise that your platforms: print, broadcast and digital, shape public perception, influence consumer behavior and impact industrial compliance."
Pointedly, Okeke who declared that standisation has now become global currency, noted that Nigerian manufacturers cannot afford to produce products that are not upto acceptable global markets standards also charged journalists to sensitise consumers on need for patronage of homemade products boost jobs creation curb the large unemployment in the country.
Noting that pursue for industrialisation without meeting the required standard would be a mirage, he claimed that it also would lead to enjoy the advantages of African Continental Free Trade Area [AFCFTA] and this should be promoted along with NIS and benefits of SON’s key programmes, like the Mandatory Conformity Assessment Programme [MANCAP] and other product certification schemes.
On his opening remarks, the Chairman, CICAN-Mr Charles Okonji, admitting that the workshop would help journalists to be good ambassadors of SON, however called on SON for more of such workshop.
