NSITF, CPPE, LCCI, LAWAN, CICAN, PENGASSAN, NACCIMA, mourn sudden death of Business Journalism Icon, Comrade Sylvester Enoghase

The death of Labour Editor and the Group Business Editor of Daily Independent Newspapers,
Comrade Sylvester Enoghase, last Tuesday, has continued to draw tributes from leading figures in Nigeria’s labour and business communities.
Among those friends and well-wishers are:
The Managing Director and CEO of the Nigeria Social Insurance Trust Fund (NSITF), Barrister Oluwaseun Faleye;
The Chief Executive Officer, Centre for the Promotion of Private Enterprise (CPPE), Dr Muda Yusuf;
The Director-General, Lagos Chamber of Commerce and Industry (LCCI), Dr Chinyere Almona;
Members of Labour Writers Association of Nigeria (LAWAN) where he served as Chairman and continued to play vital roles until his death;
CICAN, Commerce and Industry Correspondents Association of Nigeria, where he was an active member until his death; PENGASSAN.
NSITF
On his part, Faleye, in a personal condolence message issued on behalf of the management and staff of the NSITF, said the organization received the news of Enoghase’s passing with “profound shock and sadness,” noting that the veteran journalist was widely respected for his professionalism, courage and dedication to labour reporting.
According to the NSITF chief executive, Enoghase distinguished himself as a committed advocate for workers’ welfare and a steadfast ally of the Nigerian labour movement throughout a career that spanned more than two decades on the labour beat.
“Mr. Enoghase was an exceptional journalist, a committed advocate for workers’ welfare and a steadfast ally of the Nigerian labour movement,” Faleye said, adding that his contributions to labour journalism earned him admiration across different sectors of society.
He noted that Enoghase consistently demonstrated remarkable professionalism in reporting labour and industrial relations issues, helping to promote understanding between workers, employers and policymakers through balanced and insightful coverage.
Faleye further stated that the late editor’s work played a significant role in advancing workers’ rights, promoting safe and healthy workplaces and amplifying the voices of ordinary Nigerian workers who often struggled to have their concerns heard.
“His contributions to advancing workers’ rights, promoting safe and healthy workplaces, and amplifying the voices of ordinary Nigerian workers earned him the respect and admiration of colleagues, labour leaders, employers and policymakers alike,” he said.
The NSITF boss also highlighted Enoghase’s leadership role as a former chairman of the Labour Writers Association of Nigeria (LAWAN), describing his tenure as instrumental in strengthening labour journalism and fostering constructive engagement among stakeholders in the world of work.
Faleye observed that Enoghase remained committed to his profession until the very end, recalling that he had only recently returned from 2026 Geneva, Switzerland, where he covered the 114th International Labour Conference (ILC) of the International Labour Organization (ILO).
“The fact that he returned only recently from Geneva, Switzerland, where he covered the 114th International Labour Conference underscores his dedication to duty and his passion for labour reporting until his final moments,” Faleye remarked.
He extended condolences to the late journalist’s family, the management and staff of Daily Independent Newspapers, members of LAWAN, and the leadership of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), Trade Union Congress (TUC), and the wider labour movement.
CPPE
Similarly, the Centre for the Promotion of Private Enterprise (CPPE) described Enoghase as a business journalism icon whose professional contributions significantly advanced private sector advocacy and economic discourse in Nigeria.
In a statement signed by its Chief Executive Officer, Dr.Muda Yusuf, the CPPE boss said "CPPE received news of the journalist’s sudden passing with “profound shock and deep sorrow,” stressing that his influence extended far beyond the newsroom.
“Sylvester was more than a journalist; he was a committed advocate of private sector development and a trusted ally of the Nigerian business community,” Yusuf said. “Through his professionalism, diligence, humility, and passion for economic development, he consistently amplified issues that mattered to businesses and helped shape public understanding of critical economic policies and reforms.”
The CPPE noted that Enoghase’s unwavering support for private sector advocacy, his warmth character, and his dedication to business journalism earned him widespread respect among policymakers, colleagues, and members of the organized private sector.
Describing his death as a painful loss to both the media profession and Nigeria’s economic development community, CPPE claimed his friendship, encouragement, and invaluable contributions would be deeply missed.
Yusuf also extended condolences to his family, the management and staff of Independent Newspapers Nigeria Limited, members of Labour Writers and of Nigeria of Nigeria (LAWAN) where he served as Chairman and continued to play useful roles until his death
and members of the Commerce and Industry Correspondents Association of Nigeria (CICAN), praying for the peaceful repose of his soul.
NACCIMA
And his part, the President of Nigerian Association of Chambers of Commerce, Industry, Mines and Agriculture (NACCIMA) lamented against the sad news, saying,"On behalf of the President, the Council and the entire membership of the Nigerian Association of Chambers of Commerce, Industry, Mines and Agriculture (NACCIMA), I write to express our heartfelt condolences to the leadership and members of the Commerce and Industry Correspondents Association of Nigeria (CICAN) on the untimely transition of late Comrade Sylvester Enoghase, Business Editor of Daily Independent newspaper.
In a statement, the President, Engr. (Dr.) Jani Ibrahim described the news as shocking one, noting that "Late Mr. Enoghase was a distinguished professional whose dedication to business journalism and commitment to promoting economic discourse contributed immensely to the development of Nigerian business operating environment. His passion, dedication to duty and impact will be greatly missed by colleagues, associates and friends.
"At this difficult time, we pray that God Almighty grants his family, his colleagues at Daily Independent Newspaper, the CICAN community and, indeed, the general media/journalistic family, the strength, comfort and fortitude to bear the effect of this irreparable loss.
"'May his cherished memories continue to serve as a source of inspiration and solace to all he left behind," Ibrahim said.
LCCI
Likewise, LCCI DG, Dr Chinyere Almona, on behalf of the Chamber said, "The Lagos Chamber of Commerce and Industry (LCCI) has expressed deep sorrow over the passing of Mr. Sylvester Enoghase, the Business Editor of Daily Independent Newspapers.
In the statement, LCCI described the late editor as an accomplished journalist whose contributions significantly enriched business journalism and public discourse in Nigeria.
In a condolence message dated June 17, 2026, and addressed to the Commerce and Industry Correspondents Association of Nigeria (CICAN), Almona, said the Chamber received the news of Enoghase's death with profound sadness.
According to the Chamber, the late journalist distinguished himself as a respected business editor and dedicated professional whose insightful reporting helped deepen public understanding of economic and commercial issues across the country.
LCCI noted that through his commitment to ethical journalism and balanced reporting, Enoghase played a pivotal role in fostering informed engagement between the business community, policymakers and the general public.
The Chamber further acknowledged his unwavering support for LCCI's activities and advocacy efforts over the years, stating that his professionalism, passion for economic development and objective reporting earned him widespread respect and admiration among colleagues, stakeholders and members of the business community.
"Mr. Enoghase was a consummate journalist whose contributions to business journalism enriched public discourse and strengthened understanding of economic and commercial issues in Nigeria," the statement noted.
While mourning the veteran journalist, LCCI extended its heartfelt condolences to his family, colleagues at Daily Independent, the Nigerian media community and all those whose lives he impacted through his professional work and personal interactions.
The Chamber prayed for strength and comfort for his loved ones during this difficult period, while celebrating the enduring legacy he leaves behind in Nigeria's media and business sectors.
LAWAN
In the same vein, members of Labour Writers Association of Nigeria (LAWAN) led by the Chairman, Comrade Toba Agboola, expressing sadness great shock over the sudden death.
Toba in a statement by the Secretary, Comrade Adenike Ajiboye, lamentedly said, "it is with deep sorrow that we announce the passing of one of our own and Chairman Emeritus of the Labour Writers Association of Nigeria (LAWAN), Comrade Sylvester Enoghase, who passed on in the early hours of today, Tuesday, June 16, at Ijaiye General Hospital.
"May his soul rest in perfect peace."
Among the LAWAN team that visited the family were Comrade Victor Young, Comrade Adenike Ajiboye, Comrade Akorede Ogunbunmi, Comrade Joy Obakeye, Comrade Abiola Beckley, Comrade Abiola Ismail, Comrade Taiwo Omilani, Comrade Gloria Nwafor, Comrade Andrew Ojiezel.
CICAN
And on their parts, members of Commerce and Industry Correspondents Association of Nigeria (CICAN) led by the Chairman, Comrade Taiwo Hassan, in a statement, the Chairman of the Commerce and Industry Correspondents Association of Nigeria (CICAN), Mr. Taiwo Hassan, during the condolence visit assured them of the association's unwavering support during this difficult period.
Members of the delegation included CICAN's Financial Secretary, Mr. Canice Okpara; Assistant Secretary General, Mr. Azeez Disu; and Mr. Niyi Jacobs, among other members of the association.
Speaking during the visit, Hassan expressed the association's heartfelt condolences to Mrs. Enoghase and the entire family, describing the late Comrade Sylvester Enoghase as a dedicated journalist, committed colleague and valued member of the association whose contributions would not be forgotten.
"We are here to share in your grief and to let you know that you are not alone in this moment of sorrow. On behalf of the entire CICAN family, I encourage you to remain strong and take comfort in the legacy your husband left behind. We pray that God grants you and the family the strength to bear this painful loss," Hassan said.
The CICAN chairman further assured the widow that the association would continue to stand by the family and urged her to keep members informed about developments regarding the burial arrangements.
"CICAN will continue to support you throughout this period. We also appeal to you to keep the association updated on plans for the burial so that we can fully participate and provide whatever assistance may be necessary," he added.
Also speaking during the visit, Financial Secretary Canice Okpara and Assistant Secretary General Azeez Disu conveyed the association's condolences and prayed for the peaceful repose of the soul of the deceased. Mr. Niyi Jacobs commended the family for their courage and resilience in the face of the loss and reiterated CICAN's solidarity with them.
Responding on behalf of the family, Mrs. Enoghase expressed profound appreciation to the leadership and members of CICAN for the visit, describing it as a source of comfort to the family.
"We are sincerely grateful for your visit, prayers and words of encouragement. Your presence today has strengthened us and reminded us that my husband belonged to a family beyond his immediate relatives. Please extend my heartfelt appreciation and greetings to all members of CICAN for standing by us during this difficult time," she said.
Mrs. Enoghase also assured the delegation that the family would keep the association informed about burial arrangements and other related developments.
The visit concluded with prayers for the peaceful repose of Comrade Sylvester Enoghase and renewed assurances from CICAN members of their commitment to supporting the bereaved family in the days ahead.

Likewise, the leadership of
Petroleum and Natural Gas Senior Staff Association of Nigeria (PENGASSAN) in the statement by Acting General Secretary, Comrade Jerry Amah said,
"The Petroleum and Natural Gas Senior Staff Association of Nigeria (PENGASSAN) extends its heartfelt condolences to the leadership and members of the Labour Writers’ Association of Nigeria (LAWAN) on the
passing of your esteemed Executive Member, Comrade Sylvester Enoghase, on June 16, 2026.
We received the news of his demise with deep sadness. He was a distinguished labour journalist, a committed
professional, and a dependable ally of the labour movement whose contributions to labour journalism and
advocacy will remain memorable.
As you mourn this painful loss, we join his family, friends, and colleagues in celebrating a life dedicated to
service, integrity, and professionalism. We pray that Almighty God grant all who mourn him the fortitude to bear
this loss and grant his soul eternal rest.
