Election, Taiwo Hassan becomes new Chairman of Commerce and Industry Correspondents Association of Nigeria

Following the expiration of the tenure of its executive team, members of Commerce and Industry Correspondents Association of Nigeria (CICAN) on Thursday, 15 January 2026 elected a new leadership.


The election, which was keenly contested, took place at the NACCIMA House, Lagos, attracted members from over 45 media houses.


The atmosphere at the venue reflected both anticipation and professionalism as members queued to exercise their franchise in what many described as a defining moment for the association.


At the end of the voting process, Comrade Taiwo Hassan of New Telegraph emerged as Chairman, securing 25 votes to defeat the only challenger, Comrade Rhoda Ogunseye of CrystalNews.com, who polled nine votes,  as one vote was voided out of  the 35 members that  took part in the election.


The official results were announced by the three-member electoral committee led by Comrade Haruna Jimoh of MITV, who declared the process transparent and in line with CICAN’s constitution.

Jimoh confirmed that Comrade Hassan met all the required electoral conditions and was therefore duly elected to lead the association for the next three years.


Other members elected into the new executive council include Comrade Stanley Ihedigbo of Mirror Online Newspaper as Vice Chairman and Comrade Olufemi Orioye of OGBC as Secretary General.


Comrade Funmi Adeoye of FRCN was elected Assistant Secretary, while Comrade Merit Ibe of The Sun Newspaper emerged as Treasurer of the association and Comrade Canice Opara of DispatchNewsOnline, who was elected Financial Secretary,.


In his acceptance speech, Comrade Taiwo Hassan expressed deep gratitude to members for the confidence in him and the new executive council.


He pledged to lead an administration anchored on transparency, accountability, and fairness, assuring members that their collective interests would guide all decisions.


Hassan emphasised that members’ welfare would remain a priority, promising enhanced capacity-building programmes, proactive policies, and stronger engagement with stakeholders in the commerce and industry sector.


He further reaffirmed CICAN’s commitment to national economic development, stating that the association would continue to contribute meaningfully to public discourse in support of Nigeria’s aspiration of becoming a $1 trillion economy.


The electoral committee was made up of Comrade Haruna Jimoh of MITV, as the chairman, Comrade Ayanfeoluwa Providence as Secretary and Comrade David Oladimeji of BusinessNews.com as a member, rounding off an election widely applauded by members as a success. team.


Commending the conduct of members, Comrade Haruna Jimoh described the election as free, fair, and credible, noting that the peaceful process reflected the unity and maturity of CICAN.


He urged the newly elected officers to remain committed to their campaign pledges and to work collectively towards strengthening the association’s relevance and visibility.
