Lagos State Secretary of National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW), Comrade Usman Teslim, has expressed readiness of the union to join in Pension Commission (PenCom) Contributory Pension Scheme.
Just as the branch, according to Teslim, has entered into partnership with the State Ministry of Transport to ensure data capturing of tricycle riders in the state towards their proper identification.
According to him, "Our plan is to include NURTW into pension commission (PenCom), as such, the National body of NURTW is considering the idea and ready to incorporate the union members into Pension scheme that would guarantee the future of members and enable them to access government loans at minimum interest rate in their transport business and buying of vehicles.
"This development is a good initiative because you can imagine somebody driving for 30-35 years and at the end of his service cannot have something to lay his hands upon for all he has worked for, he cannot say this is what I am going to use to continue my life after retirement.
"It will also give us opportunity to assess finance because most of our members use their own savings to purchase vehicles, they don't have opportunity to access loans even if they want to, the interest is going to be in the high side because it's not coming from the government side".
He advised PenCom to use the NURTW initiative as a test run and work towards bringing other unions, marketmen and women in the informal sector into the pension scheme.
The State Secretary of NURTW, Comrade Usman Teslim who disclosed this, disclosed that the collaboration is meant to have proper identification for each tricycle rider.
According to Teslim the move will later be extended to Okada riders, buses drivers and all those that have business in the transport sector.
He assured full cooperation of the state NURTW in the scheme as it will bring further orderliness in the informal sector of commercial transportation.
Speaking on measures taken by the state NURTW to sanitise the union, Teslim said with discipline measures already in place, the union has changed from the previous ways members of Lagos State NURTW were.
"Members of NURTW are now responsible men, they are no longer how the public used to see members as touts, holigans or irresponsible, members are now discipline and comply with the rules and regulations of the union and have desist from any action that can cause disruption of peace"
According to him, "democracy is now embedded in the structure of the union which makes its election to be peaceful and smooth transition from one regime to another."
Comrade Teslim therefore called on all drivers, operators to continue to be discipline in their day to day activities and for the drivers to co-operate with traffic officers and not see them as enemies but responsible people doing their jobs to sanitise traffic on the roads.
"We are not yet there but we are working strongly to see how we can march forward with modern transportation system," he said.
Moreover he said the union is having the mind to include pension for members.
