Reason why Federal Inland Revenue Service is becoming Nigeria Revenue Service from year 2026

As part of efforts to create more enabling environment Nigeria’s revenue administration has set for a major overhaul as the Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS).

As such, it is now to be known as Nigeria Revenue Service (NRS) from January 2026, marking what officials describe as a fundamental shift in how public revenue is managed.

Arabinrin Aderonke Atoyebi, Technical Assistant to the Executive Chairman of FIRS, Dr Zacch Adedeji, said the change represents more than an institutional rebrand, stressing that it signals a new approach to transparency, accountability and economic growth.

Speaking on the reforms, Atoyebi said the transition to the NRS responds to long-standing public demands for a more efficient and transparent revenue system. “This marks a change in how the country manages revenue,” she said.

The move follows the signing into law of four major tax and revenue reform bills by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu on 26 June 2025. The legislation includes the Nigeria Tax Bill, the Nigeria Tax Administration Bill, the Nigeria Revenue Service (Establishment) Act, 2025, and the Joint Revenue Board (Establishment) Bill. Together, they repeal the former FIRS Act and provide the legal framework for a unified federal revenue authority.

Under the new laws, the NRS will assume responsibility for all federal government revenue, including both tax and non-tax sources. Atoyebi emphasized that the expanded mandate is designed to improve coordination across government agencies and strengthen oversight of funds paid into the Federation Account.

“This is not about giving the agency a new name,” she said. “The NRS will now oversee all federal revenue, allowing government to track what is collected, how it is collected, and where it goes.”

The reforms are also expected to simplify compliance for taxpayers and businesses.

According to Atoyebi, registration, filing and payment processes will be streamlined, reducing the need for multiple physical interactions with government offices and enabling businesses to plan more effectively.

“Registration, filing, and payment will be straight to the point,” she said, adding that the reforms would significantly improve service delivery.

Addressing concerns around data security, Atoyebi noted that the new legal framework includes stronger protections for taxpayer information. “Confidentiality is clearly protected,” she said, aimed at boosting public confidence in the system.

As Nigeria moves closer to 2026, the transition from FIRS to NRS is widely viewed as laying the groundwork for a modern revenue administration built on collaboration, trust and accountability.

“2026 is no longer just another year,” Atoyebi said. “It marks the start of a revenue era built on trust, accountability, and progress for every Nigerian.”
